PREFACE
This history of the Normans of Culpeper County, Virginia, starts with Isaac Norman who was a pioneer along the Rappahannock River in what is now Culpeper County. Culpeper County was formed from Orange County in 1749, Orange County from Spotsylvania in 1734, Spotsylvania from Essex, King and Queen, and King William Counties, 1721. Fauquier County was formed from Prince William, Stafford, and King George Counties in 1759. Northumberland County formed l648, was known as the parent county of these and other early counties in this section of Virginia. However, many pioneers of what is now Culpeper County came up the Rappahannock River from the Tidewater section of Virginia from Middlesex, Gloucester, and other counties.
Since the writer of this history has received many inquiries from Norman descendants in many sections of the United States and Canada concerning their ancestors, this has been written. An attempt has been made to stick strictly to the truth. It is hoped that information contained will help those who are interested in their Norman background.
